Small Engine Repair
A small engine repair shop works on portable air compressors and diesel engines. Small engine repair shops work in, and on behalf of, the customer. Smaller engine repair shops fix, service, and repair small engine engines. Small engine repair shops repair and service small engine equipment ranging from lawnmowers to chainsaws.
A small engine repair shop must be owned by a mechanic and licensed under the laws of the state in which he or she works. They may be franchises operated by corporations or one-man operations, but all employ mechanics who have been trained to do the repairs they are hired to perform. All mechanics have at least a high school diploma or a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) and can get additional training through continuing education courses on specific repairs. All repairs made by these mechanics are original equipment unless stated otherwise on the sales receipts.
The requirements to become a mechanic are almost the same in all states, although a small engine repair shop will most likely want to hire someone who has a little more experience, so that they have a better chance of getting the work done right the first time. In order to get licensed, they must complete an approved automotive technician program. Then they must complete state and/or federal training. These programs provide the mechanics with a thorough knowledge of the repair process for various makes and models of cars and other outdoor power equipment. After the program is completed, the individual must successfully pass a written evaluation on the contents of the training course. This evaluation will help ensure that the individual is competent enough to handle any unforeseen repairs while under the supervision of other mechanics.
Some equipment used by mechanics include pumps, fuel tanks, alternators, carbs, fuel lines, filters, fuel pumps, gas cylinders, glow plug sets, heat shields, key chains, tire and rim repair tools, spark plugs, washers and more. They also use grease, fluid, lubricants and additives for proper operation. They must be licensed before they can start working on any vehicle. Before they can start working on any car, they must pass a background check. Mechanics must also take a practical test before they are certified.
There are many different types of fuel systems, but the most common type of vehicle engine is the 4-stroke engine. The 4-stroke engine has a piston, which creates a compression and then compresses the fuel (gasoline) in the cylinder. The combustion engine is the part of the engine that converts the energy in the fuel into mechanical energy. Typically, fuel is burned in a cylinder in a normal fashion (in a high compression engine), but some vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, and trucks, have a low-compression engine, which uses a mixture of gas and oil instead of gasoline.
With all the different types of engines available to consumers today, mechanics must know which type they are working on and what type of vehicle it is. It would be very difficult to repair small engines if you did not know what type it was. Many times mechanics will contact their dealers or companies and find out the make, model and year of the car or truck they need to repair so they know what type of parts they need to work on it. Many companies also will supply them with the part and they will install it for them.
